What is a share price?

Imagine you wanted to buy a small part of a company; that part is called a share. The cost to buy one share is known as the share price. The daily share price fluctuates based on the company's performance and investor sentiment about its future prospects. Factors influencing these changes include financial results, market trends, news, and economic indicators. In simple terms, the share price shows how much a piece of the company is worth at any given time.

Example of share price

As you can see in the price chart of NVIDIA below, NVIDIA shares (NVDA) are currently trading at around $119 as of the time of this writing. This means that each share of the company is worth $119 on the stock market. The share price can change frequently based on how investors perceive the company's value. For instance, positive news like strong earnings or a new product launch might increase the share price, while negative news like a missed earnings target might decrease it. This example shows how share prices reflect investor sentiment and market conditions.

How are share prices determined?

Share prices are determined by the forces of supply and demand in the market. When more people want to buy a stock than sell it, the price goes up. Conversely, when more people want to sell a stock than buy it, the price goes down. Several factors could influence supply and demand, including a company's financial performance, news about the company or its industry, broader economic trends, and investor sentiment. For example, if a company announces a breakthrough product, demand for its shares might increase, driving up the share price. Similarly, negative news could decrease demand, leading to a lower share price.

Conclusion

As you've learned, a share price represents the cost of purchasing one share in a company. It fluctuates based on market conditions, reflecting investor perceptions of the company's performance and prospects. However, it should not be confused with the company's overall value or market capitalization, which is the share price multiplied by the total number of outstanding shares. Understanding share prices could help investors and traders make informed decisions, but it's crucial to consider other factors, such as earnings, growth potential, and market trends, before investing or trading.
